Services

The psychologists at FPA have a broad range of experience so we can offer many services for the legal community.  The information below outlines our most requested services, but there are many other types of evaluation and testimony we can provide to attorneys, courts, and public agencies.  Because of our extensive connections with colleagues, even when a service is beyond our scope of practice we can often provide a referral to an appropriate resource.  Please use the "Contact Us" page to submit an inquiry about our services.

Most criminal cases are either paid by the Court or privately retained for a flat fee.  Services for civil matters, capital sentencing evaluations, and sexually violent predator assessments are usually charged on an hourly basis.  Each doctor has a separate fee schedule.  We accept cash, checks, Master Card, Visa, and Discover.

Court Ordered Criminal Evaluations

FPA accepts court orders for competency, sanity, and sex offender evaluations on both adults and juveniles within our designated service area.  Whenever possible, we travel to jails, prisons, detention centers, group homes and psychiatric hospitals to perform the evaluation.

If a defendant is on bond, we will be happy to meet him/her at our outpatient office for the assessment.  However, if the defendant cannot travel to our outpatient office in Chesterfield County, then we will make arrangements to meet with the defendant at a more convenient location, such as the courthouse or the attorney's office.  If your court is in
our area of service, you do not need to call before issuing the evaluation order - just fax the signed order along with the warrants or indictments and the names of the judge and attorneys to 804-739-6725.  Please give us 30 days to complete the assessment.

Privately Retained Psychosexual Evaluations

Dr. Evan Nelson is Certified Sex Offender Treatment Provider. He travels to the jails and sees defendants in his outpatient office for both assessment and, in limited cases, treatment.  FPA maintains a specialized psychosexual treatment lab and has an on-site polygrapher.

Custody Evaluations / Parental Fitness
Dr. Michele Killough Nelson conducts custody evaluations and psychological evaluations of parents in the Greater Richmond area. These evaluations are typically conducted at the outpatient office.  Dr. Nelson only accepts these evaluations if they are court ordered or done by mutual consent of the parties.

Testamentary Capacity / Guardianship
Dr. Michele Killough Nelson administers testamentary capacity, guardianship, and conservatorship evaluations in the Greater Richmond area.  These evaluations may be conducted at her office or at the individual's home.
